Cool Deck Coating vs. Acrylic Resurfacing: What's Right for Your Arizona Pool Deck?

What each system actually is

'Cool deck' usually refers to a cement-based textured overlay applied over existing concrete. Acrylic resurfacing is a modern polymer-modified system troweled or sprayed in multiple coats, then sealed.

Both hide cracks, add texture for slip resistance, and cool the surface. The difference is in the resin — and how long that resin holds up under Arizona UV.

Heat reduction in a Phoenix summer

In our field tests across the Valley, a light-colored acrylic finish runs 25–35°F cooler than bare gray concrete at 3 p.m. in July. Traditional cool deck runs about 15–25°F cooler than concrete but chalks and fades faster.

Lifespan and maintenance

• Cool deck (cementitious): 5–8 years before recoating in AZ sun.
• Acrylic resurfacing: 10–15 years with a simple re-seal at year 7–8.
• Both should be pressure-washed 1–2 times a year.

Which should you pick?

If your deck is structurally sound and you want the longest life with the best heat performance, acrylic resurfacing is the stronger investment. If your budget is tight and you plan to sell within 5 years, a cool deck refresh may be enough.
